I just renamed this post to “The First Thing That Matters: Product/Market Fit”

Great stuff, Ash. Enjoyed (re)reading your popular posts. WRT the name change, the difference between "The only" and "The first" is one of perspective:

As entrepreneurs, we have the ability to shift to a different market; thus if "the first" step fails, we just change directions.

VCs are evaluating bets based on lots of different options and information; given so many options, they'll chose "The only" one that matters most.

Thanks to Ash for the deep and detailed deliberation, and to Raj, Nivi and Dan for adding some good "decoration", if you allow me to call it that.
Since I'm developing the Workpatch task-matching tool first for volunteer organizations ("enterprises") ánd their volunteers, I will need both the fit with the organizations, and with the users. Since they will both want to have advantage when working with Workpatch.
I'll digg a little deeper into Steve's work as well. Thanks for pointing to it. And off I go, working on my MVP!

I do believe the market/product fit comes first. Otherwise you may end up conducting landing page optimization and wondering why it is not optimal when in fact the market/product fit isn't right.

My suggestion would be to make sure you ahve the right produt fit/market and visitors will become buyers, then optimize landing page to increase buyer potential.

We need to revise Andreessen's "The only thing that matters is getting to product/market fit."

It should be "The FIRST thing that matters…"

Hey Ash,

This is a great post. First time I've ever read such a detailed post on someone's customer discovery journey. I'm looking forward to more of your posts. Good luck!
