Building a Lean Startup (Austin Lean Startup Meetup, Feb 2010)

We had a great turnout for the first Austin Lean Startup Meetup. Eric Ries called in to kickoff the event and there was a lot of entrepreneurial energy and ideas for how we can take Lean Startup theory to practice.

I presented a high-level overview on building a lean startup using CloudFire as a case study. Here are the slides (slightly edited to overcome lack of audio).

Want More Tactical Techniques for Systematically Building Your Startup?

Since writing my book, I’ve taught dozens of workshops, fielded hundreds of questions, and adapted these principles to startups ranging from web to enterprise to clean tech.

While I’ve been amazed by how well these principles apply across a range of products and business models, the major obstacle for most still centers around the reduction of these principles to actionable tactics.

    I have taught myself (over the years) to hack together HTML and CSS reasonably well which is my preferred prototyping tool combined with photoshop for graphic elements. The quickest landing page for me would be all done as a single graphic with photoshop and a CTA button or link.

    Thanks for the elan startup presentation. Just to understand, you did launch CloudFire first and then gathered feedback? Or literally you gathered feedback before any prospect ever trying the app? thanks

    The latter… CloudFire is a derivative of a previous product BoxCloud but before investing in building it out, I first gathered feedback on the problem it would be addressing to evaluate if it was worth doing at all.
